A 17-year-old screaming, burqa-clad girl whipped by Taliban fighters in Pakistan's restive Swat Valley for coming "out of her house with another guy who was not her husband" adds another episode to the series of savage incidents taking place in the name of religion. The incident re-inforces the fact that the ultimate loser in a war is woman who loses her identity as well as honour in the hands of the marauding army that finds women to be the most coveted trophy they can easily lay hands on. Public lashing of the girl is only one angle of the whole mayhem that continues to take place in Swat valley. That other heinous crimes against women are taking place in the valley cannot be ruled out. The inhuman dictat by the Taliban where it denied education to girl child and forcing marriages of the marriagable girls only with Taliban fighters have broken the last straw of hope for the hapless women of Swat. Every months hundreds of Taliban fighters are falling to the bullets of NATO forces rendering an equal number of women widowed who are left with no hope. As men are dying and widows are not allowed to step outside their homes, their children are starving. Is this the kind of society Taliban wants to impose in the name of religion? How can the creator of human race allow all this to happen, I wonder at times.
Just today I was reading a report on how a group of about 100 Afghan women, protesting against marriage law, were pelted with stones. The law says that a husband can demand sex with his wife every four days unless she is unwell or would be harmed by intercourse. Does this not tantamount to marital rape? What will this Taliban-style subjugation lead to? It is sickening to say the least!
